Patti M. Fox, Clay Artist
19 W 5th Ave
Since early years I have considered myself an entertainer, not an artist. I was the class clown, the sports mascot, the student on stage in every play. In college I majored in theatre, and I was a charter member of a local community theatre group that survived more than 25 years. When a friend from that theatre group described the results of all our efforts to put on a stage show as “Temporary Art”, I had an Ah-Haa! moment. We actors (and directors, and stagehands, and production crew) were indeed Artists, in a medium I did not at that time consider Art. It did not matter what we called it, as long as it was fun.
I first learned to throw clay on a wheel in 1987 and fell in love with the tactile beauty and versatility of this ancient material. When not involved in the urgent priorities of a stage production I learned much about pottery and clay, taught some classes, and created all sorts of fun and whimsical works in clay. The honeymoon period never ended. In 2016 I set aside the theatre part of my life to pursue my growing passion of working with clay. I realize now I was not transitioning from “non artist” to “artist”, I was just focusing on one medium and achieving permanence with my work. What did NOT change was my nature as an entertainer.
I want those viewing my work, my audience, to smile. I produce comedy, not drama. If you’re looking for deep inner meaning in my sculpture, don’t bother. I smiled as I was creating it, and studies show that by doing so I actually boosted my immune system, in addition to boosting my mood. If you smile when you look at it I got what I wanted, and I hope I lightened your load too.
