I generally start with an idea of what I”m going to make, whether it’s a bowl, urn, ornament, etc. I then find an appropriate wood for that project. I develop an idea of the final product using the wood blank shape as guide. (for example I can’t make tall wide salad bowl from a blank that is shallow) Sometimes with urns, I’ll rough sketch the shape or have a photo of a similar piece to what I want to make. Sometimes the wood has a completely different idea of what it “wants” to be so I’m always open to redesign opportunities. As the piece develops I watch the grain patterns, defects (such as knots or voids) that need to be taken into account in the final piece. Sometimes a piece of wood is very plain and lends itself to embellishing with pyrography, texturing and/or coloring. Knots & voids are sealed or filled depending on the final piece. Large voids, worm holes/tracks & knots can turn a bowl from a utilitarian piece to a display/artsy piece.
As the piece is finished, the final wood finish is considered. If it’s utilitarian, then a food safe finish is applied. Decorative pieces receive a glossy lacquer or polyurethane finish. When the finish is curing they get buffed and waxed.
