MJones Artwork and Batik
Place Category: Artists
Mary Jones is a local artist residing in Minong, Wisconsin. She is the owner of MJones Artwork and Batik and is a retired art instructor of 32 years. Her passion for creating art began at a young age when she lived in Port Washington, Wisconsin, drawing inspiration from the stunning views of Lake Michigan and the surrounding landscape. Each summer, her family would travel north to their remote cabin in Iron River, Michigan, where her true appreciation and adoration of the northwoods was forged. Mary’s longing for artistic expression, combined with a love of nature, drove her to pursue and earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Art Education at the University of Wisconsin – Stout. While in college, she developed a niche for pottery, with a focus on natural and organic forms. This focus has continued to shine through in her work, but her passion and media choice has changed to batik. Traditional batik is created on 100% cotton fabric, using clear wax as a resist, and colored dyes for the subject matter area. Mary’s work, unlike traditional batik, uses melted wax for color enhancement to the art piece by melting and painting the hot wax onto fabric in an encaustic fashion. Prior to removing the wax, the fabric piece is dipped in dye to create the crackled effect characteristic of batik work. The result of her creative media exploration is beautifully colored wall art, using driftwood and other natural materials to enhance the work’s subject matter. Mary is excited to be a member of the Arts in Hand Gallery and will be teaching a variety of classes at Studio 210 located above the gallery.
